The holidays are here. If your mind isn't on the security of your home, it should be. You might not realize this, but your chances of becoming a victim of a home burglary increases during the holidays. That's because criminals know that most people are going out and making big purchases this time of year. Luckily, you don't need to become a statistic this year. You can take precautions to protect your home and your family. Here are several suggestions that will help improve the security of your home during the holidays: 

Start the Season Off with a Lock Inspection

If it's been a while since you've had your locks inspected – or you've never had that service performed – now's the time to take care of that. You may think that your current locks are doing their job. However, that might not be the case. In fact, if your current locks are more than a few years old, they may not be providing your home with the security you need. Contact a locksmith near you, and have them come out to inspect your locks. It might be time to replace them with new keyless entry systems and upgraded deadbolts.

Update Your Home Security System

If you have a security system installed on your home, you may think that's enough. However, you might not realize that your home security system should be updated from time-to-time. As technology improves, new programs can be added to your home security system to make your home safer. Some of those updates may include motion-activated security cameras, or systems that allow you to access your security system from your cell phone, or computer monitor, while you're away from home. Cover Your Packages When Entering the House

You may not know this, but those packages you're bringing into your home could make you the perfect target for burglary, especially if they're packages for big-ticket items such as computers and televisions. During the holidays, make sure you cover your packages before you carry them into the house. Better yet, pull your car into the garage, and shut the door, before you begin carrying your packages into the house. Burglars will be less likely to target you if they don't know what you have in your home. It's also important that you take care when throwing the packaging away. Tear boxes into small pieces and make sure the lids are on your trash cans.
